Home Care Services For Kids With Special Needs Or Disabilities

The state of Georgia has enacted a number of new laws aimed at protecting children. These new laws are part of the Growing our Children’s Act, which is a multifaceted effort designed to improve the lives of Georgia’s youth. The first new legislation that was recently passed in Georgia is a tax break that allows parents who operate businesses that offer home care services for children to claim an income tax deduction. This tax reduction, according to Georgia Rep. Jack Westerman, R-Unionville, is meant to encourage more parents to start a Home Care Service for Kids organization. The tax break also helps new parents become more involved in their child’s care.

In addition to the tax break, another piece of Georgia’s Growing Our Children’s Act offers tax credits to child care centers that use accredited childcare providers with special needs and children who suffer from severe disabilities. According to Westerman, several children who experience special needs and disabilities are often left out of mainstream childhood education classes. “These kids need to have someone to teach them what to do and how to do it,” said Westerman. For instance, a child suffering from cerebral palsy may not be able to sit up on his own or learn how to walk. But a caregiver working with this child can teach him to crawl. The child would then be eligible for tax credits under the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Disability Tax Credit, depending upon his own particular situation.

There are other state-funded programs that help families with children with severe disabilities to achieve financial independence by allowing caregivers to deduct expenses related to home care. One example is the Medicaid Special Children’s Program (SSCP), also known as Medicaid Shared Services for Children. While only a fraction of the cost of caring for a child with special needs and severe disabilities is covered by SSCP, the program has helped many families. According to Westerman, families caring for one minor child with a disability can apply for Medicaid as a caregiver and use the deduction.

Another state-funded program that helps families in Georgia meet certain requirements related to caring for a child with severe disabilities is the Special Needs Trust. As part of this program, parents of a child with special needs and a minor child may claim certain tax credits. According to Westerman, most families caring for a child with a severe disability may qualify. The minor child will have to meet certain requirements, such as being enrolled in the school or the parent or guardian acting as a physical therapist or occupational therapist in order to apply. But parents and guardians may also claim the credits for caring for an older child with special needs.

The Minnesota Careers Development Center is a nonprofit organization that has several different programs that help working parents in various fields. Among its different programs for working parents with special needs and/or disabilities is the Work Force Development Program, which provides assistance in finding suitable jobs for parents and guardians who need assistance with finding work in the field they have chosen. The program also helps these parents and guardians find jobs related to caring for kids with severe disabilities.
